The classic – Asphalt Modification with Lucobit® 1210A

The reliability of our roads is largely determined by the climatic conditions and the increasing number of automobile traffic. With the exponential increase in the number of road users, especially heavy goods vehicles with high axle loads, roads and bridges are exposed to significant stress, which often manifests itself in the form of ruts and cracks. In order to counteract this negative traffic development, extensive measures would have to be taken.

By adding Lucobit® 1210A, the mechanical properties of asphalt concrete, stone mastic and mastic asphalt are significantly improved.

Lucobit® 1210A can be added both into the binder by pre-mixing with bitumen (PmB) and directly into the asphalt production mixer (PmA).

Lucobit® 1210A: Scientifically proven top performance for long-lasting road infrastructure

Lucobit® 1210A is a thermoplastic granulate that consists of a mixture of high-quality polyethylene copolymers and special bitumen (ECB). The bitumen is finely dispersed in a continuous polymer matrix.

Lucobit® 1210A is a material that was developed by BASF SE in the 1950s. Its outstanding properties have been repeatedly confirmed by scientific studies by independent testing institutes. In a direct comparison with conventional asphalts, the addition of Lucobit® 1210A shows clear advantages over standard asphalt, particularly in terms of track formation and resistance to climatic influences such as heat and cold.

The Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) has successfully completed a research project with polymer-modified sections of the BAB 7, in which the functionality and sustainability of Lucobit® 1210A was confirmed under real conditions and longer periods of load.

Depending on the specific application, the amount added is usually up to 5% of the binder. When added to the asphalt mixer, only a moderate extension of the mixing time is necessary, as the polymer in Lucobit® 1210 is already broken down by bitumen.
