[ Commodity prices ] Rise in prices for polyethylene, polypropylene and Hifax in Europe
LyondellBasell, the globally leading company for the development, production and marketing of polymers has announced that as of July 1, 2008 it will raise the European prices for a tonne of polyethylene by 200 Euro and the price for a tonne of polypropylene by 150 Euro. As of August 1, the company will raise the price for Hifax by 200 Euro per tonne. Hifax is a primary product of thermoplastic polyolefins (TPO). This is the third time this year that LyondellBasell is raising their prices. As a reason for this considerable rise in polyethylene prices the company names the drastic rise in crude oil and energy prices as well as the high utilization of the cracker’s capacities.

Hans-Robert Schmidt, Senior Vice President of LyondellBasell Polyethylene Business stated that the margins were decreasing since the beginning of this year. Especially the price of crude oil, a primary product of polyethylene has risen drastically in the last months. Experts see the cause in globally increasing demands especially from Asia and the USA, speculative transactions on the energy market as well as a lack of refinery capacities. The global chemical company Lyondell-Basell has adjusted to the constantly increasing demand for raw materials and secured access to strategic resources. In pril LyondellBasell announced the acquisition of the oil refinery at the petrochemical site in the French Berre lÉtang. Berre is one of the largest petrochemical sites in Southern Europe. At this chemical site LyondellBasell is operating steam crackers, a butadiene extraction plant as well as polypropylene and polyethylene facilities. According to plan also the construction works for two PE-Machines at the Saudi-Arabian Al Jubail are running. LyondellBasell is involved in this project with 25 percentage. At the location at the Persian Gulf emerge lines for „Hostalen” PE-HD and „Lupotech” PE-LD with each 400.00 jato capacity.
