At the 5. International Transport Conference held this year in Wuppertal (28. - 29. August) a wide audience of building authorities, politicians, research institutes, construction companies and material- and testing institutes will discuss the advantages of modified binding agents/ asphalts for state agencies, drivers and the environment. In the past, 80 percentage of all German roads have been constructed with asphalt, which presented not only the final solution but also new challenges regarding special traffic developments.Increased axle loads and heightened traffic volumes lead to overstraining of the road surface, which brings into focus the subject of safety, serviceability and warranty deeds especially regarding economical aspects which need to be further scrutinized. Moreover, the aspects of occupational and environmental safety during the manufacturing, installation and sealing of current and future
asphalt concepts play an important role.
Advantages of polymer modified asphalts
These challenges are faced with the limited road construction budgets of the Federal States, districts and local authorities. The modifying of binding agents and asphalts by means of adding polymers, wax and adhesives makes it possible to create sustainable constructions. They improve usage properties especially the creeping- and fatigue strength. For example, the use of polymer modified asphalts e.g. with Lucobit® 1210A diminishes considerably the formation of lane grooves. By means of reducing the temperature during manufacture, installation and sealing, the adding of wax makes for a reduction of the CO2 exposition for manufacturers and constructors. Resulting from this are longer serviceable lives and lower maintenance costs for asphalt covers, which lead to financial advantages for state agencies while at the same time guaranteeing more safety and smoother traffic flows due to the fact that there are fewer road constructions. Dipl. Ing. Sezgin Köse represented the LUCOBIT AG as a partner of the International Transport Conference Wuppertal and in his speech granted a perspective on thermoplastic modification. Being in charge of the field of asphalt, he explored the subject of “Polymer-modified asphalts in modern concepts” and reported about LUCOBIT’s experiences. In his lecture Köse presented the current approaches with polymer-modified asphalts meeting the challenges of asphalt constructions. He especially focused on the LOAD concept, a noise reduction asphalt cover, which significantly reduces wheel-induced noises by means of a concave surface structure. LOAD was already realised at the Düsseldorfer Kennedydamm. Using the practical example of Lucobit® 1210A, he illustrated them essential necessity of using a modified binding agent to reach maximum stability of the surface structure. Furthermore, he presented the cases of industrial surfaces with special stability requirements, which were met by polymer modifications. Finally, he talked about the improvement of standard concepts, which by adding the modified binding agents become hard road surfaces with high resistance to deformation.
