[ New concepts in road construction ] LUCOBIT materials help improve life and road quality
The demands on modern asphalt have changed drastically. Until recently, construction methods according to the standardization of the superstructure of traffic areas (RStO) were resistant to the strains of the traffic at the time. Today, however, the strains of an increased traffic volume and high thermal fluctuation exceed the capacities of standardized road construction concepts. Moreover, the strict demands on environmental regulations and noise control constitute a real challenge for road constructions. In order to comply with warranty periods and regulations in the future, modern non-standardized construction and asphalt concepts will become more and more important. Here, the focus will be on solid asphalt concepts, in which polymer modifications e.g. with Lucobit® 1210A play a major role.

Take for example noise control:
According to recent polls, 14 million people feel harassed by constant traffic noise. According to EU Directives about the reduction of noise emissions in cities, communities and local authorities shall develop and implement plans for the reduction of traffic noise. Now that manufacturers have drastically reduced the vehicles’ engine noises the focus lies on tires -and pavementsinteraction as noise sources.

Optimized "low-noise" asphalt seems to be the way to consistently reduce the traffic noise level in our cities. Nomen est Omen: with noise-reduced asphalt facings, the noise level will be considerably lower.

A road construction project at the Kennedydamm in Düsseldorf’s inner city could provide striking evidence of the value of noise-reduced asphalt facings. The project was successfully realized with Lucobit® 1210A and drastically reduced the emission of the cars’ tread noise. The concept, which was designed especially to fit the requirements of inner-city streets used special asphalt surface modified with Lucobit® 1210A in order to minimize the traffic’s tread noise.

Take for example asphalt stability:
Recent forecasts stipulate that the number of trucks used in freight traffic will rise by 80 per cent from 1997 to 2015. Research has shown that the destructive force of a 10-ton truck approximately equates the impact of 10,000 cars. The asphalt concepts in use today have reached their limits. A comprehensive study has shown, that by using a special additive e.g. from LUCOBIT’s range of materials, one can create highly robust asphalt facings. The study compared various additives to see whether they were improving the deformation stability of the asphalt. The result: polymer modified asphalt is particularly suitable for highly strained traffic areas, which was confirmed by the positive experience made with polymer modified asphalt in other European countries. Lucobit® 1210A in particular excelled with its technical and economical properties. Noise control and asphalt stability - only two examples of how LUCOBIT can help improve the quality of our lives and our roads.
